Academic

In my day job, I am the Head of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Anglia Ruskin University, where I am also an Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics. My teaching and research focuses on language, migration, and ethnic and cultural identities, as well as intercultural communication. I hold a PhD in Linguistics, and a PgCert in Social Research Methods, both from the University of Sussex.

My most recent books include the Cambridge Handbook of Intercultural Communication, co-edited with Guido Rings (2020), and the Cambridge Introduction to Intercultural Communication, co-authored with Guido Rings (2022).

My Quantitative Research in Linguistics was published by Bloomsbury in 2008, and in its second edition in 2013; a Spanish translation was published by Akal in 2019.

For a full(er) professional bibliography, see my university profile page.

I have a keen interest in education more generally: I am the Deputy Chair of the 2022 Linguistics Subject Benchmark Statement panel responsible for the revisions of the QAA Linguistics SBS. I am also the Vice Chair of the Board of Governors of Long Road Sixth Form College in Cambridge.

Scuba Diving

I have always liked water, whether it is swimming, paddling, snorkeling, or scuba diving. I am a PADI Divemaster (#533514), working mostly for Christal Seas Scuba in Norwich.
